5 out of 5 stars X-factor   June 25, 2007

Whatever it is, Nintendo has it. Having gamely struggled to love a PSP for 18 months I switched over to the DS Lite and have found gaming heaven.

On paper there should be nothing in it, the PSP does everything, and has better sound & graphics, a bigger screen, an in-built browser, video & picture viewing.

But with the exceptions of Lumines & Loco Roco I found the games to be basic ports of PS2 games, and thats not what portable gaming should be about. Yes GTA is impressive, but its better on a big screen and the controls work better on a gamepad. Each game I played on the PSP felt like that. And as for the controls, well that little analog hub is just useless.

So what makes the DS Lite any better? I think the main thing is that Nintendo know exactly what portable games should be about. Grab Partners in Time, Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros or Animal Crossing and you'll have yourself an object lesson in the design of handheld games. Fun, quick to pick up, clear graphics, replayability in spades.

There is no contest, it's just that, strangely, the more feature-filled and powerful system is not the winner here. Curiously a similar story is currently unfolding in the TV Console 'wars'.

3 out of 5 stars Delivered from factory with two scratches on touch screen   May 27, 2007

Bought as a birthday present so not enough time to return. Examined carefully out of the box. As well as the scratches, fortunately not in the middle, there were two tiny but noticeable white specks of dust sandwiched between the screen layers, about the size of a full stop when in text mode and which could only have entered during manufacture. A disadvantage of buying mail order is the returns process. If bought locally it would have immediately been returned for a replacement.

Nintendo state that screen protectors are not necessary but if the unit is coming scratched from the factory it can only get worse. I got the "official" Hori screen protector which goes on well enough but on the touch screen leaves a 1mm moat at the edges just wide enought to gather dust but too narrow to clean easily.

A colleague at work has the black model and its looks classic - all of a piece. The white model however looks patched up. The hinges, reported to be fauly on some units, on my unit are of a different type of plastic to the main body and of a slightly different colour. Could be that in an attempt to cure the hinge problem they have changed the assembly process at the factory resulting in the patched appearance.

My colleague speaks highly of the playability of the DS lite and a brief look at the introductory screens gives the impression of efficient and responsive software.

Fast fast fast delivery by Parcelnet by an extremely polite elderly gentleman - on Saturday!

5 out of 5 stars DS DoeS the World   May 22, 2007

Without a doubt the Nintendo DS is the most innovative handheld console ever to be released to the world, the technology works superbly well and developers and gamers alike are gladfully relishing the experience of the DS.

If you've never considered the DS before then you really are missing out on the fun! The variety of games available to you is a fantastic asset to the DS, theres seems to be a little bit for everyones tastes. You can easily play with any DS owner using Nintendo's Wi-Fi connection to connect wirelessly together; some games even give you the opportunity to play with anyone around the world by connecting to your wireless network, a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, or any Nintendo Hotspot across the country.

The DS comes equipped with some great little features; of course theres that touch screen to add a new dimension to your portable games, but you also get a built-in microphone along the base of the console - which allows you to interact with play in some games -- chatting with your friends in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, blowing out candles in WarioWare Touched!, to shouting an objection in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. One of the best (and my favourite) features is the DS Download Play facility; which allows players to play with others who don't have a copy of the game themself, sometimes hosting upto 7 or 8 players in one game from a single card! The games or levels available vary depending on whether others have a copy though - generally becoming more limited.

The DS Lite has a number of different back-lit screen settings; which allow you to save battery life when in brighter environments, to being able to play even in the darkest of places. The console has a GBA cartridge bay so you can still play your old Game Boy Advance games on one of the screens. Included is a rechargeable battery and AC charger, stylus (and spare), manual etc. Each console also comes with built-in software to manage your own profile and DS settings (eg. colour schemes) including the Pictochat utility that enables you to send and receive messages to those within range.

Unfortunately if you've owned an original DS version then you'll immediately notice the difference in the sound quality between the two consoles has deteriorated. This is, however, the only down-side to the DS Lite. Don't let this put you off, the design of the DS Lite is far superior ergonomically and in appearance, the stylus is also much easier to handle.

At the end of the day you're looking at the most successful handheld console ever, it's very easy to pick up and just play - whenever, wherever -- from a host of weird and wonderful games; for everyone of ALL ages. The graphics may not be your average jaw-dropping enriched detailed realism, but the DS gives you so much more - good old simple fun. Experience what the DS has to offer, believe me, its versatile & unique play has made a global impact on fans and developers all around world, turning a new page in gaming history - gaming may never be the same again.

I've only had this a few weeks and I've only got one game, but I'm in love with it already. I'm in my 50s and this is my first games console - yes, this is the one I was waiting for! Its main attractions are the size - light and truly pocket-sized - easy-to-use controls, bright screen and range of games. The battery life is good too, and the unit's case seems fairly robust. A real winner.

5 out of 5 stars DS to DS Lite, Did someone at Nintendo have a brain wave!?!   April 12, 2007

I've had the original DS for some time now and haven't took much notice in the ds lite

Then there was I day where I thought I should think about getting one, but I was still at an undecided stage wether I should get a lite or not. But out of the blue, my mate rang me up and told me he had a ds lite, i was like ok that's cool, and went to his house with my original ds. He was playing on it when I arrived.

I looked at the screens and was blinded by the sheer brightness of the screens and yet this was under pure sunlight!

It was about half a centimetre smaller. Slightly thinner and looked sleek and glossy. I noticed a few differences when he handed me his ds lite, and I experienced it from there.

The inside lower area (around the buttons on the bottom half of the ds) was very grippy which you get used to. The sound was quieter even on full volume. The hinge is a lot smoother. The buttons are softer and more comfortable. It has a completely new charging socket. Thicker and better stylus and the brightest screens you will ever see (Battery last same as normal ds on brightest setting) also quicker charging times.

You will be very happy if you plan to buy a DS lite even if you are not a original ds owner, i know im buying mine asap. definate 9/10
