Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Tarantino's Death Proof is the mellower of the two, relatively speaking; it's wordier (as to be expected) and rife with pulp/comic book posturing and eminently quotable dialogue. It also features a terrific lead performance by Kurt Russell as a homicidal stunt man whose weapon of choice is a souped-up car. Tarantino's affection for his own dialogue slows down the action at times, but he does provide showy roles for a host of likable actresses, including Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, and newcomer Zoe Bell, who was Uma Thurman's stunt double in Kill Bill. Detractors may decry the rampant violence and latch onto a sexist undertone in Tarantino's feature, but for those viewers who grew up watching these types of films in either theaters or on VHS, such elements will be probably be more of a virtue than a detrimental factor. --Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Enjoymentproof   November 13, 2008
Dolly Parton used to quip, "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." The same could be said about Quentin Tarantino's Deathproof, a contemporary film post-produced to look like a low-budget grindhouse movie of the 70s. But the problem isn't the look of the film - it's the story, padded out with long scenes of dull dialogue that take you nowhere. A big disappointment.

I watched this movie last night, being a dedicated fan of Kurt Russel is
the main reason for watching this movie apart from the Dodge Charger and
Challenger. This is the worst film of pure trash I have ever seen since the
one and only which will equal this and that is Paris Texas.

5 out of 5 stars Enormously entertaining   October 29, 2008

I am truly, truly devastated at the average star rating for this movie. 3 stars? Quentin Tarantino is one of the most daring and inspirational movie directors ever, but I suppose there's always going to be some that think it's 'cool' to say that his movies are rubbish. Shame, because `Deathproof' is quite possibly one of the greatest movies ever made.

Just to make a few of things clear: It's supposed to tacky, cheesy, trashy, nonsensical and offensive! It's not the polished and perfect, high-budget, twisting thriller most people seem to assume it's supposed to be! I dread to think how badly people will miss the point of Quentin Tarantino's upcoming masterpiece: 'Inglorious Bastards'.

Anyway, `Deathproof' has evidently been a massive source of inspiration to the movie business: Bring on `Bitchslap' in 2009! It's going to absolutely rule!

5 out of 5 stars the movie is stunning   October 29, 2008
between the fantastic soundtrack, the legendary tarantino-style dialogues, the car chases and the great filming, this is my favourite Tarantino so far.

5 out of 5 stars Classic killtastic Tarantino   October 26, 2008

I watched this film last night. I have watched all of Tarantino's films and love the genre. This guy just gets better. The kills are gorier, the characters funnier and even more comic-book over-the-top, the dialogue just keeps coming. What's not to absolutely love??
The 2 halves of the film were such a great contrast and, well... I won't ruin it for anyone that hasn't seen the film but WOW! What a brilliantly timed ending! His love of strong female characters and less well-known actors and music blend so well in this film.
Loved every single minute.
