Classic Cap Animation (Sort of) August 14, 2008
I agree that this collection can hardly be compared with todays quality of animation.
But they have a certain charm which comic-fans will appreciate.
Lots of iconic imagery. All slightly animated ;)
Also there are some classic lines of dialogue, which are hilarious!
Everyone should own a copy! "So says the RED SKULL!!"

I am a HUGE fan of Captain America and enjoyed this 2 disc DVD set, but I can't in fairness give it a five star rating. If you compare this with a modern animated series it just isn't the full deal. It was made in 1966 I believe and that is evident from the animation. It "sounds" like it was made for radio and "looks" like a 1966 comic book with minimal character animation.
It is unintentionally funny though and I couldn't help thinking or Terry Gilliam's Monty Python animations, but if you're looking for a smooth modern cartoon series then you might be disappointed. Nostalgia comes in bucket fulls with this series though and if don't have a giggle at the naive style then I'd be very surprised. More for the dedicated superhero historian/anorak than it would be for anyone born in the last twenty years though perhaps.

The graphics during the cheesy but patriotic and memorable signature tune is a clue to what to expect from this 1966 cartoon series, YES 1966!
Basically it is a cartoon version of several tales involving Captain America taken from the early years of Tales of Suspense and The Avengers.
For an old Marvelite like me it was great to see animated versions of several of Cap's early triumphs.
Included here are several tales set in WWII involving The Red Skull who wears a sanitised version of the costume he wore in the original comic and Adolf Hitler's role in the Skull's origin has been replaced by some generic Nazi figure. These tales also feature Cap's sidekick Bucky Barnes. From the 1960's C.A. takes on Batroc and the Red Skull again with his Sleepers and the Cosmic Cube, featuring A.I.M.
It also includes several tales from The Avengers. There is an edited version of Cap's silver age re-appearance in Avengers #4 (minus the Sub-Mariner's role) and other tales involving Zemo and his Masters of Evil (The Black Knight, Radioactive Man and the Melter), the Commisar, Super Adaptoid, Enchantress and Power-Man and ending with the Sworsdman and the Mandarin. Several versions of the Avengers are seen with Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and The Wasp, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.....and Rick Jones and Jarvis. The only downside of the Avengers tales is the daft voice given to Giant-Man. Just watch how the Wasp's costume changes over even this short period of time, a real 1960's fashion icon.
I loved watching this and kept the relevant Marvel Essentials volumes by my side to follow the story on the page as well as the screen. It brings out the tensions within the Avengers quite well.
All 13 episodes are included here and I highly recommend it, just don't expect Pixar quality animation.

I love these era of toons....and this is a bit of a classic for me. I had the older set but loved the new packaging so had to get it too. The inside slip has the episode synopsis too which is a useful touch. Good stuff!

As with all the Gantray-Lawrence produced Marvel Serieses in these releases, the 3 part episodes are cut down, with the recap footage and 2nd and 3rd titles in each episode removed.
Very disappointing. There was no need to upset the fans with this omission.
Also, there were five serieses produced: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Sub-Mariner and Hulk.
The Hulk series has been curiously omitted from these releases.
Don't spend the money, until the company does the editing job properly
