Amazon.co.uk Review
C.S. Lewis's classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes an ambitious and long-awaited leap to the screen in this modern adaptation. It's a CGI-created world laden with all the special effects and visual wizardry modern filmmaking technology can conjure, which is fine so long as the film stays true to the story that Lewis wrote. And while this film is not a literal translation--it really wants to be so much more than just a kids' movie--for the most part it is faithful enough to the story, and whatever faults it has are happily faults of overreaching, and not of holding back. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. Sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an entryway into a mystical world through an old wardrobe. Narnia is inhabited by mythical, anthropomorphic creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton, in a standout role). The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion, the Messiah figure, regally voiced by Liam Neeson).

Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based adventure story, and he wisely keeps the story moving when it could easily become bogged down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is definitely there (as it should be, otherwise it wouldn't be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren?t knocked over the head with it, and in the hands of another director it could easily have become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the children and their adventures. The four young actors are respectable in their roles, especially considering the size of the project put on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who stands out. This isn't a film that wildly succeeds, and in the long run it won't have the same impact as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the adventure. Note: Narnia does contain battle scenes that some parents may consider too violent for younger children. --Dan Vancini

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment   October 22, 2007
Good family film. Acting, actions scenes, special effects and characters are all very well done. Might be considered scarey for younger children in places (my 3yo has never had a problem) but never gory. No real hint of any religious message which wouldn't bother me either way really.
This has remained watchable even after a fair few viewings.

5 out of 5 stars In Love...   December 24, 2006

Oh God,do I love this film or what?! Everything is just perfect, the acting, the brilliant story, and the visual effects. And no,I'm not just a fan of the movie who never touched one of the books.I read this book at the age of 7 or 8 maybe, and then continued with reading the other Chronicles of Narnia.Going deeper and deeper into a strong Harry Potter obsession,I sort of pushed Narnia aside for some years, but this movie brought me back to the magical land of Narnia once again.I haven't seen any of the other adaptaions of this classic (like the BBC one or the cartoon),but I dare say that this must be the best one ever.I'm totally amazed with the actors, who played their parts extremely well.Everything is just like I imagined from reading the book for the first time, that day 6 years ago.
So what more can I say? I am in love, and have been for almost a year now. This is the best film I have ever seen, and I do really recommend it to any Narnia fan or fantasy freak.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant adaption of a brilliant book!!   August 25, 2006

I was very excited when I first heard that they were making a movie of Narnia. Knowing that the movie was being made by Andrew Adamson (the creator of the Shrek movies) I knew that this movie had to be good! As soon as we could swing it, we went to see the movie at our local cinema...
Beating the Lord of the Rings on my mental list of favourite movies, Narnia is now my Number One! It was brilliant!

Finally making up for the pathetic wooden thing used in the BBC Series, Aslan finally comes to life as a very realistic-looking CGI beast. Even the pixels that represent eyeballs enable the viewer to feel his emotions!
The special effects were impressive. You can really believe in the fantastic creatures of Narnia and you might even mistake Mr Beaver for the real thing when you first see him.

The acting is also wonderful. Georgie Henley is so right for the role of Lucy - all the Pevensie children are, in fact. And Ray Winstone really brings a sense of rough working-class cockney to the Beaver!

On a literal level, the LWW stays pretty faithful to the book. There are deviations, of course, but you cannot avoid that in film adaptations. The spirit of the story is still alive!

Do not judge this by its subtle Christian meanings - the Matrix was also said to have had religious allegories! I must urge you as a long-time Narnia fan not to pass up this wonderful movie.
You'll be the only one who misses out!
