4 out of 5 stars Very sick but nicely observed   July 22, 2007

There are lots of shows and movies out there which get cheap laughs with wall to wall gross and offensive gags. There's a market for that, for sure, but to make it more than just a bunch of crude jokes picked up in the playground you need an angle and some quality writing.
The central idea of a reality show populated by 8 very different cartoon stereotypes is rich with parody/ satire potential, and that's what makes Drawn Together funny. We recognise each character not just from their cartoon context, but as personality types we've all seen desperately grabbing 15 minutes of fame on some lame-ass reality show.
There's Clara, the Disney-esque Princess who's previous lack of social interaction gives her a killer combo of wide-eyed innocence and jaw-dropping bigotry.
Then you have Zandir, the closet gay videogame adventurer "on a never ending quest to save my girlfriend" who doesn't come out until ep.3, but is so blatantly camp everyone else is way ahead of the game when he finally admits it to himself.
You have Ling Ling, the ersatz Pokemon battle monster with a latent psychotic streak who speaks "Japorean" so no-one understands his attemps to communicate and treats him like a house pet, which irritates the hell out of him. He's the culture shocked outsider of the group and my personal favourite.
Toot Braunstein is a Betty-Boop style has-been sex symbol from the 1920's. She quickly realises that she doesn't turn guys heads like she used to back in the day, so resorts to a mixture of bitching, self harm and eating disorders in her desperate bids for attention.
Captain Hero is a superhero and overgrown fratboy who will shag anything on legs.
Spanky Ham is a hedonistic, crass internet download pig who regularly sinks lower than a limbo champion.
Foxy Love is a sassy "Josie and the Pussycats" style mystery solving musician in the Hanna Barbera mould. What she lacks in formal education and family stability, she more than makes up for in common sense and sex appeal.
And Waldoor Sockbat is the "Spongebob" of the group. He desperately needs a Ritalin perscription and his relentless in-your-face whackiness gets tiresome to the others. He also fills any professional role asked of him in any given episode.
There are some cracking one liners and smart observations about reality TV along the way.
The result is like an animated Big Brother with all the boring bits edited out!
