Bloated and gimmicky "update" of a classic October 10, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
It happens with nearly every "classic" game- someone wants to sell a new version, but they have to justify its existence by adding flashy graphics and extra features. Unfortunately, most of the time these are just bloat and gimmickry- at best they detract from the fun simplicity at the heart of the game, and at worst they actively get in the way.
They get in the way here. Tetris, in its "classic" form (most notably the archetypal Game Boy version) was a simple but fun to play game. You just wanted to pick it up and play it. Load Tetris Worlds, and you'll be bamboozled by all the over-elaborate game modes, bored by the competent-but-generic techno/trance-style music and annoyed by the addition of a stupid anthropomorphic "block" character. I'm not even sure if it's possible to play a reasonably authentic game of classic Tetris on it.
The Roger Dean artwork is quite nice, but there's not enough of it to give the game a true personality. Elsewhere we get more flashy-but-generic (again) PC graphics, so this aspect comes across as a little half-baked; a missed opportunity.
In short, this is all icing, and I'm not sure if there's even a cake in there.

I am extremely disappointed by this game. I had to make complicated adjustments to my XP computer to even get it to play, when I did it is full of annoying gimmicks and far too easy - I am no gaming expert but even the supposedly difficult games were so easy as to become tedious. I never thought I could be bored by Tetris.
a good game buried in extraneous nonsense November 11, 2006 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
The single player game and its intriguing new variations are great fun, and overall extraordinary value for money. It is, as claimed, addictive and its good to have a pure game (For anybody wanting a good game for children - not a shot or alien in sight). The package overall is marred by inept, trivial and irritating additional graphics, a very poor manual and an absurd time-limit (not modifiable) on the multi-player mode. Once you are past the manual, however, you can concentrate on the game proper and, as claimed, have fun for hours. Be aware of the extraneous irritations and buy it anyway.
