Very good, easy to use, fun and educational! November 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My four year old daughter who is coming along really well with her reading and has mastered some two to four letter words, loved this Reader Rabbit CD Rom. She understood and enjoyed every step of the way. It was easy enough for her to navigate, fun enough so that she didn't get bored and most importantly easy enough for her not to get discouraged yet difficult enough to present some challenge and for her to learn and practice her words through it. It saved her progress and allowed her to go back to where she left off. She did the whole CD Rom in no more than 5 seatings (couldn't get enough of it) and enjoyed it lots. The only bad thing I would say about the whole thing is that the 'record and play back feature' didn't work as 'we did not have enough memory available in our computer' (which we did). Another message appeared to say that it would not be able to play the CD Rom in colours as our system did not meet the minimum specifications (which it did), but despite this warning message, everything was displayed in colours. Now my daughter has completed it, I will try to get her to go over it again as now she does not need to go over it in order and can jump between letters. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to stimulate their children in their learning to read process.
Learning through play! March 6, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I don't agree with the first reviewer at all! The program saves progress, so that you can return to where you left off - must have been something wrong with their disc? I have bought loads of different cd-roms for my little boy who's now nearly 5 and have encountered numerous problems, but this program is really good! We have experienced issues with the software from Dorling Kindersley, but these cd's run without problems, also on XP. The games are challenging enough to keep him interested, but still learning through play, so that he doesn't lose his patience as he has done with others. It was really important for me to find a way of helping him forwards with reading and writing, without him "realising it" as he hates "traditional learning" through copying letters etc and I think this is finally it! If you like me have been searching for good software, let me recommend a couple of other ones: Learning ladder is excellent, The Jump ahead series seems good, but for now my boy finds it's too much learning and not enough play - hopefully he'll return to it later... On the other hand Play & Learn could have been good if it had been a bit more structured, but unfortunately you have to start at the beginning every single time and there is no way of gauging progress, probably better for slightly younger children. Finally all Dorling Kindersley programs we have tried have seemed really good, but we have had nothing but problems with the software, due to system requirements etc and their technical support is absolutely horrendous, so I've felt obliged to stay well clear! I will post this review on the individual titles as well, because I found it such a struggle to find recommendations whe we set out on the search for software, so appologies if you have already read this somewhere else!
A lot of learning combined with engaging fun August 1, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's amazing how much creative fun they've built into the software and how much learning it provides in the process. My son loves to play this because to him it's a really fun game and he has made more progress with this than any other tool. I bought Britanica's reading software series and it was very poor compared to this. There is lots of creative exploration and games through which reading is learnt. I highly recommend this software.
The only draw back for which I give it 4 starts is that its screen resolution is only 640-480 and needs to be manually adjusted down (unless you create a shortcut and set it for 640x480). Software needs a bit of graphics updating for today's times.
Rubbish April 20, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I like reader rabbit, and some of their software is excellent, but not this one.
The whole CD had to be done in order, and when my son closed down and started again, he had to start back at the begining again.
There is really only one game, and that was finding a word from a selection of three words. My son knows his first letters, but can't read at all, but because the three words all had different first letters he could always work it out.
But it didn't get progressively harder, ie show 3 words with the same first letter.
So I don't think he learnt anything.
