Amazon.co.uk Review
Nero Burning ROM has long been heralded as the best all-round CD writing software that is available. This latest incremental release (Nero 5.5 Burning Rom CD Writing Software) adds a gamut of minor enhancements and some significant new features to ensure that it stays ahead of the pack. Where Nero excels is in its advanced feature set, tailored towards those who want to maximise the use of their CD-RW drive. Whether you are looking to overburn CD-Rs so as to squeeze more data on, write to multiple drives simultaneously, create bootable CDs, remove hiss from analogue recordings, utilise Burnproof technology or you need UDF support for packet writing CD-RWs, Nero has a powerful set of tools to help you. It is also the ideal companion for those working with multimedia files. A powerful new audio editor enables you to make CDs the way you want them to sound, with a cross fader for overlapping tracks, and the ability to remove or modify pause lengths between audio tracks. MP3 is well accommodated for, with a Media Player and encoder, though the latter is limited to encoding 30 tracks, before a separate plug-in needs to be purchased. Video creation is also a breeze with an enhanced MPEG1 encoder that supports drag and drop of AVI files to convert to VCD/SVCD format discs. For those with less experience of CD writing, who are likely to be overwhelmed by the vast array of features Nero has to offer, a Wizard system is available to manage the less involved tasks. This makes burning direct copies of CDs a simple matter of following a walkthrough of options. While these wizards have helped to make Nero more accessible, the manual could still do with improving. A CD labelling kit is supplied with the software, along with a small supply of blank labels to get you started. This is accompanied by improvements to the cover editor, which lets you make your own designs for your CDs and cases. Previous Nero users may not find enough new features from version 5 to warrant upgrading, but anyone using an earlier version, or those new to CD writing, should certainly consider getting hold of this excellent all-round package. --J. Weston

1 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE THROWN TO THE LIONS!   September 3, 2003

This is a pointless piece of software. It promises a lot but when you get the wrapper off it's just the old giveaway Nero with a feeware-level wav editor and a useless label designer. Need to encode MP3s? you will need to buy a separate plug-in. Want to burn SVCD? The same applies. DVD? Yes, you guessed it. As if that wasn't bad enough, all these plug-ins are "available soon."
You can see why they called this after Nero - he was famous for doing nothing as well. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars All you need is Nero   July 31, 2003

I bought this bit of kit on the recomendation of a friend, and I wasn't dissapointed. I had several programmes for converting files, printing labels and burning cds. I have uninstalled all of them as Nero does all these jobs and more. The help files are good, and the wizzard helps novices to compile and burn their favorate tracks or data.
I would recomend this to anyone, from novices to experienced users, its so easy to use. My 12 year old son is hogging it at the moment, I cant wait for school to start so that I can get a go..

5 out of 5 stars At last, something competent...   July 24, 2003

Other users of this software have indicated their appreciation, now I'm going to! Before I bought this software, I tried the trial version just to see if it was what I had in mind...verdict: great ! After the trial expired ,(it lasts about a month), I decided to buy the full version. My main use for it is to compile SVCD's for playing on DVD players, it copes with this job admirably, but that ain't all it does...version 5.5 also captures video (if you want it to), and of course it does the usual audio operations including Mp3, (via plug in, bought separately), cross fades can be added, music captured from tape etc etc. Best of all it hasn't yet ruined a disc from buffer underrun, either in the trial version or the full one. The supplied hard copy manual is reasonably useless, gives a bit of quick start info, that's all really, the full manual is on the cd. Packed along with the software you also get a few cd labels and a 'sticker on-er' of cd labels ( to keep 'em central). It's very much worth the money, but remove all your old cd burner software before you install, just to stop any potential conflicts. If the trial version is still available I recommend you try that first, it's free and about 11Mb to download, you don't get any help files with it though, then when you find out that you are impressed, buy the full version..especially at Amazon price coupled with Amazons rather excellent delivery service.
