1 out of 5 stars It's like playing Pinball...you don't know which direction the ball is going to go!   November 19, 2008
Even die-hard PES fans must be frowning.
I do not normally get involved with the Fifa v PES battle as I would rather spend my time playing games, but felt I needed to convey my thoughts on this years incarnation of PES2009.
I have played PES since I can remember and this is top of the list.
Problem is that the list I refer to is a list of games I wish I had never bought.
It is truly a dreadful effort, or lack of it, and has gone backwards in nearly all areas.
The main thing I look for in PES is playability, sadly this now has gone.
Once a lovely fluid game is now a clunky mismatch of poor graphics, passing errors and
Poor play. Sound effects have also taken a step backwards. For example. the sound of the ball being kick is so unrealistic and shabby, it sounds like someone kicking an empty cardboard box around their front room.
The only thing that appears to have been improved is the music content.
The addition of the Legend mode does not make up for it.
Relying on the core code of game play for too long has come back to hit them where it herts. It now needs to be built from scratch, as implementing tweaks here and there does not fool anyone any more.
I can't tell you how annoyed I am. You wait until the next incarnation of your favourite
Footy game comes along and ouch! Feels like I have had the football whacked in my nether regions! I never buy Fifa but I need to play a decent football sim and have to say that PES is now not top dog.
Konami have scored an a couple of own goals in the annual Fifa v PES competition.
Lets hope they can come back with a better effort next year.
One hopes that they look at the people who actually play the game and all the comments made and bring it back to the top.

2 out of 5 stars LAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!   November 19, 2008
They've failed to sort out the lag AGAIN!! I don't know a great deal about the inner workings of computer games but how the hell can games like C.O.D and G.O.W be played online with very little lag at all(if any!!) and games like this lag like a big pile of steaming....!?!? I returned PES2008 the day after I bought it because the lag was so terrible and I will be returning this aswell. I really enjoyed playing PES 6 online on the PS2, but playing this is a bit of a chore really. You might aswell watch a demo and toss a coin to see who wins because a lot of it comes down to pure luck depending on whether the lag does you a favour or causes your opponent to score. I've won a few games and just felt no satisfaction because I know I just got lucky during particularly 'laggy' moments. Basically, if you enjoy playing PES online and you're undecided as to whether to buy the game as you are still wondering whether it lags or not well trust me..... Avoid it because you will only be disappointed. Boycott this nonsense until Konami stops treating us like big '' signs and starts providing us with the finished product we are paying them vast amounts of money for!

1 out of 5 stars PES vs FIFA, can this REALLY be a valid dillema?   November 17, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Firstly i'd like to thank EA Sports for my big pay check that arrived this morning in my troll-office.

So for the dillema of my title. Actually nowadays it is. PES 2008 was EASILY and i'd even say it's common ground, a complete and utter POTATO.
This is taking the potato as a base and NOT the previous PES's (6 and back)
and works upwards.

The masterminds of this game have worked in such a way as to transform this game to a FIFA more and more, while at the same time FIFA was copying (simulating or actually copying as far as industry spying and hacking is concerned) the PES series becoming more like it.

In this year the managed to pick their fantastic plot. Switch places. Or not really. PES 2009 is actually FIFA 2009 and FIFA 2009 is another playable football game, slow and realistic but in a good, really good way. THIS game on the other hand is a disaster.

-Goalkeepers are doped.
-The 5 amazing strikers are still doing incredible stuff u are not responsible for, even if you are boasting for them at your friends.
-Players are solid. They are maneuvring like ships. Come on 8 direction strict turning? What is this? Kick Off 3 ? Are we in 1989?

+Through balls are actually better than the mess they were in 2008. -Unfortunately they DONT produce amazing chances.

-AI is ridiculous. Either high or low. You either score 13 goals in a match at the old 3 star equivalent or get massacred at 5. 4 stars produce a 0-0 score in every possible team combination. You can play 13 million times and you will have a good 12 million ending in 0-0. White tie for the win mein comrades.

This game is so annoying, hell am even bored to further review it.
If I was paid from a magazine to review it, I'd quit.
It used to be massive fan setting championships with friends playing all nighters with friends. Hell PES (Pro as we call it in Greece) was a religion.
There's even a Reggae-Rock song that made it in the Charts, called "smoking weed and playing pro".

Yet this is undeniably a POTATO friend. Go FIFA, or play PES 6 or 5 if still have your XBOX 1 :P or stop playing football in your living room and start organizing 5v5 matches with your friends.

. A POTATO .

1 out of 5 stars not good enough   November 16, 2008
bought this for my flat mate for his birthday and after enjoying PES08 was really looking forward to playing it. I am so disappointed!

the through balls are terrible.
it's almost impossible to make the pass go where you want. it does work occasionally and when it does it's very effective but i would say about 60% of the time it doesn't go where you want.

the referees are dreadful
every tackle (even if in the replay the player clearly got the ball) results in a yellow card. the number of completely ridiculous red cards is really annoying

the commentary is a joke
the two most annoying things for me are 1. when the keeper makes an unbelievable double save and palms it over the bar only to get abused for not catching the ball from a shot that came from about 6 yards out. 2. the manager of the team gets slated for not bringing on any substitutes AT HALF TIME! everything they say is terrible
also they have made the crowd chants this year really annoying. it's just a repetitive drone noise that does your head in.

the menus look like something you would expect in a game 15 years ago, very blocky and plain (that really doesn't matter but it's annoying)

become a legend mode
a great idea and i do actually quite enjoy playing this. however, all of the above still applies and it takes so long to make your guy any good that it just gets frustrating. I'm in my third season (it's taken me ages!!) and my player is still rubbish.
also, computers just aren't smart enough yet to control the rest of the players. it's just so annoying!! you can make an awesome run and not get the ball then one of your team mates will make a great run and the guy on the ball passes to you. it's just completely random.

basically, PES are having a laugh. they were charging 40 when i bought this and it's worse than PES08 by a long way. the only fun bits are playing against your mates and maybe the become a legend mode. you can play against your mates on PES08 and the become a legend mode is probably worth about 10. tricky to see where they got the 40 price tag from...

5 out of 5 stars fifa have lost to konami once again here is why...   November 14, 2008
I'm a 15 year old boy and i have been playing pes since version 2, and this new one is without a shadow of a doubt the best one so far by a clear mile.I recently played the latest version of fifa at a friends house and i was shocked at how wooden the game play was.
Pes still has that special something that fifa doesn't, maybe you can only appreciate it if you care more about gameplay than officialness.
I can only think that fifa employees are being payed to put bad reviews on amazon because this game is incredible and how anyone could give it a one star review is ludicrous.
On fifa it is too hard to run past people, it is unrealistic that ronaldo can't get past a non league defender without using pathetically unrealistic skill which looks like something out of a west end musical.
It seems that once again pes has beaten fifa and perhaps fifa need to concentrate more on gameplay than making their players have the correct things written on their shirts.
