2 out of 5 stars lacks balance   May 29, 2007

There is no denying that i was highly excieted when i heard that MAdden would be a launch title for wii. The thought of using motion controls to throw catch, hand-off and side step (or stiff-arm and juke if you like your americanisms) sounded too good to be true, and in many ways this is the case with Madden 07 wii.

Its hard to deny that the game, and more specifically the controls, are lots of fun. The running game in particular seems highly refreshed by mapping side-steps to the nun-chuk and stiff arms to the wii remote. Passing is also a fairly satisfying with a throwing motion throwing out a pass, who's speed is determined by the speed of your throw, i.e. slow motion is a lobbed pass, quick motion is a bullet.

Add to this the typical madden attention to detail (like the ability to customise your stadiums, set ticket prices, make fans, change your franchise name and so on) and the new 'superstar' mode where you graduate through college and get drafted (porbably more for the American crowd) means that MAdden 07 for wii should, and i repeat SHOULD be the best football game of all time....espcially considering the current failings on xbox 360 and PS3.

Yet there are huge problems with this game that detract from the enjoyment considerably. First of all are the graphics and presentation. We all know games aren't about good graphics alone, but they do help a player become immerssed and this is where MAdden wii fails considerably. EA has monopolised the NFL license completely, and rather than using it to its full effect, its made a shoddy attempt that only confirms the fears of those who were anxious that Madden purchased the licesnce so it could make cheaper games quicker for more money. Graphics are below PS2 standards, and while the faramerate is fairly smooth, its hardly impressive. In the physics departments, you often see players dissapear in replays or merge into one another. The less i mention the Nintendo 64-esque cut scenes the better. Commentary is dreadful and the in-between game presentation is almost non-existant. It all reminds me of how good Sega's NFL 2K5 was on the xbox...it was gorgeous, detailed, had a sound physics engine. On top of this its ESPN presentation, excellent commentary and tv-like replays and highlights reels made you feel as though you were playing football yourself. This is just not the case in Madden wii.

But all of this would be forgivable (it is after all a launch game) if it weren't for the unbalanced gameplay. Defence has become so secondary that the game is completely geared towards attacking. Awkward defensive controls (were you literally have to swipe the ball down) coupled with the way in which the AI literally HURLS its RB's through your line like they're being pulled by a giant magnet so that even with a packed run-defence the opposition will make 8 or more yards. Its near impossible to stop the computer scoring at will (and they will have the same difficulty stopping you) to the point that you will play the worst team in the league and (only) win 55-45. Arcade football is one thing, but poor balance is another and these constantly high-scores make the game highly repetative rather than exciting. Gone are the NKL 2K5 days when it was genuinly satisfying putting together a first down, or making a hard fought 4 yards. Without this sense of achievement, this game suffers from repetition and i've only bothered to play 2 whole seasons before stopping

in conclusion, i'd wait for MAdden 08 due in August. If they get the balance right, use the licesne how they should and utilise the wii's considerable graphical capabilities, it could be the best sports game ever. As for now, i'll hold my breath.

5 out of 5 stars The Best NFL Game Ever   March 8, 2007

This is definately the best NFL game ever created.

Obviously being on the Wii, EA have made an attempt ot integrate the controller into the game as best they can and they've done a top-notch job. You are recommended to do all the training exercises before you get into this game so you can learn teh new control system, and once you have you'll never go back to the conventional method.

You use a throwing motion to throw the ball, the 3D stick on the nunchuk to run and the extra few buttons to do stuff like sprint, spin and dive. You also use the motion sensitive controller to shove players out the way, catch and tackle by thrusting them in the required direction. It all adds up to a completely immersive experience.

The only downside I can find is with the kicking where you have to flick the controller upwards. You have to get it jst right and it is frustrating and very costly when you get it wrong. You need to spend time practicing before delving into the whole host of modes avaliable, from exhibitions, franchises, 'hall of fame mode' and tournaments. There's also so much detail about every player and you get all the stats of everything from ticket prices in the addictive Franchise mode where you guide your created or non-created team through the seasons, where you aspire to win the Superbowl.

The graphics are very good, not exceptional by anyones standards but the stadiums and all the players look very realistic with the exception of the coaches who look like PS1 models with absolutely no detail in their faces. Weird.

Anyway, this the best NFL football experience you'll get without actually playing and when you finish a match, although not tired, you feel a bit exhausted mentally & physically and need a rest before the next match. The gameplay is very well balanced with the majority of my matches going right down to the wire.

If you're an NFL fan and a Wii owner - you must have this game. No excuses!

5 out of 5 stars very good game   February 22, 2007

Brilliant Wii game. Only downside is you must know the rules for it, or as i, you will not fully understand. Now i have gotten used to the rules, i find this game very in depth with great graphics. The controls are brilliant too. A simple throw of the wii-mote and the ball flys to your runners in the end zone.
Must buy for a sports fan wii owner

5 out of 5 stars A different take...   February 22, 2007

This is a short but sweet review. Everyone so far has mentioned the controls and they are indeed inovative and get you in the action much more! As a player of the sport myself (and it is actually called AMERICAN FOOTBALL not AMERICAN "FOOTBALL" for everyone that reads the other review thats a little shallow minded on that front) getting used to them came easy but with the tutorials and having spoken to other people who have never really watched or played the sport, or the game before but own this, they say its easy to get into as long as your willing to put up with a few sessions of confusion to sort out at first. Don't get me wrong the controls are quite complex but don't approach this expecting it to be simple because its a complex sport, and a complex control system on any games console! And these controls are similar in many aspects to what a real player does in a game which is great!
The main difference in these controls (other than the obvious moving around bit) is that a lot more of the moves (such as swatting the ball as a DB) rely on timing more so than in other incarnations of the game. But the combination of the wii remote and nunchuck is worked well in my opinion.
Gameplay wise it features everything you'd expect. Your usual single game, franchise and the new superstar feature (with its positional specific cameras which is better than 06s version) so this will be nothing new to anyone who has had Madden 06 or 07.
Graphics are really nice and smooth. I can't compare them to Gamecube having never played that version but they are smoother than on PS2. The bit you don't notice is the detail of the sidelines and the stadiums. These are much more detailed and improved from the PS2 version particularly, plus the grass itself seems more textured. In my personal opinion I think this edition of Madden on Wii has concentrated more on getting the controls right and keeping the graphics reasonably similar...next seasons release I imagine will attempt to push the Wii's graphics capabilities more but we shall have to wait and see.
Another thing to note on this is how quick things load, there is very little time sat waiting for games etc to load which is very good.
Personally if you like the sport and want a game that gets you a little more involved then this is for you! New fans might like to try it as something different but if your not prepared to be a little patient then don't bother buying it! Overall an excellent game in my opinion.
